Our Story


Our Story: Basecamp was originally set up for school activity camps. When the Covid pandemic hit and schools were closed, Basecamp sat empty. We soon realised it could be safely opened up for families and small groups. On the 16th July 2020, Basecamp opened to the public for the first time. Families loved the location, the space and the freedom to camp wherever they liked and enjoy a campfire. Basecamp was an immediate hit.

Facilities: We improve our facilities every year and now have five toilet blocks, four shower blocks and two washing up areas. Our check-in tent has evolved into a Pavilion serving hot and cold food, breakfast rolls, pizzas, local beer and cider and ice-cream plus a fully stocked shop with souvenirs and a proper barista coffee machine with comfy seating areas.

Free activities: We built a giant sandpit, an indoor toddler play zone and provided free circus skills which proved so popular that this year we are introducing a free programme of family activities every day of the week. Mendip lodge: No stay at Basecamp is complete without taking the short walk through our ancient woodland to discover our hidden country lodge and beer garden. Enjoy home-cooked food, amazing beers, Thatchers cider, stunning views and free, outdoor live music. Activity centre: Our 250 acre site also has an outdoor activity centre with over 20 fun activities including skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf course, rock climbing, abseiling, caving, archery, snowboarding, air rifle shooting, archery active, a Nerf battle zone and axe throwing. If you prefer getting wet we even have a water sports centre with canoeing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding a short drive away.

Award Winning: In 2023 Basecamp was recognised as the best campsite in Bristol, Bath & Somerset and came second in the South West of England Tourism awards.

The Basecamp vibe: Despite all of the improvements, our rustic charm remains unspoiled. Basecamp will always be a special place for families to disconnect and spend quality time together in the great outdoors.

Basecamp is a family-run campsite in the heart of the beautiful Mendip Hills, just outside Bristol, five minutes from the M5. Surrounded by ancient woodland, our spacious campsite is perfect for families, small groups and adventurers.
