Where is Mendip Basecamp?

Mendip Basecamp is located within the grounds of Mendip Activity Centre. This is part of the Mendip Hills, National Landscape. Located just off the A38, between Weston-super-Mare and Bristol with easy links to the M5.

Our address is Mendip Basecamp, Lyncombe Drive, North Somerset, BS25 5PQ.

When you arrive onsite, follow signs up the drive, keeping to the right rather than entering the main carpark on the left. After a hairpin bend, you will go under the ski slope bridge (max clearance 2.7m). Continue driving past Mendip Lodge.  Continue to follow the signs to Mendip Basecamp which will take you up the hill to the camping fields.

Head for the large white marquee in the middle of the field, the Pavilion. This is where you will check in.

Can we bring a generator?

We ask all customers to please not bring generators with you.

There is USB charging available in the Pavilion for all customers to use.

Are you accessible?

Are you accessible?

We are very fortunate to be situated in such a stunning location set in the Mendip Hills. Unfortunately, this does come with its limitations. We pride ourselves as being as accessible as possible; however, we do not have any accessible toilets in the campsite.

The paths leading to our onsite activities can be fairly muddy and uneven. Pushchairs/wheelchairs/mobility scooters may struggle depending on what part of the site they are trying to access.  We have recently installed a lift in our main centre which allows disabled access to our cafe-bar. Our main activity centre has accessible toilets.

Please view our full accessibility statement here: www.mendip.co.uk/accessibility

Can I see the camp guide?

Yes, you can view our full campsite guide here: www.mendip.co.uk/guide

Are there any access/height restrictions?

Our site is situated at the top of a hill. This makes for some brilliant views but it also means access can be a little tricky.

We have a low sloping bridge with a strict height restriction of 2.6m and a tight hair-pin bend on a hill.

Campervans are welcome but the site is not suitable for motorhomes.

Trailer tents are welcome onsite but the hair-pin bend may not be suitable if it is your first time towing. Caravans are not permitted onsite.

Camping

Can I pitch my tent anywhere?

Yes! We want to keep things as relaxed as possible so we don’t have pitches. Our camping field is massive so there will be plenty of options of where to pitch.

We want to keep an area for kids (including big kids) to be able to run around in, and obviously, we wouldn’t recommend setting up camp on any of the tracks but we will give you a map on check in to show any no-go areas.

If you are camping with friends or another family you are welcome to pitch together but please keep at least 3m between tents of the same group and 6m of tents from different parties.

Can I camp near my friends?

Yes! We don't have pitches, just various 'zones'. It does not matter if you book at the same time or together, just find each other on-site.

Can I park by my tent?

Yes, you can park next to your tent. Our field and track can be quite bumpy and uneven in places so please take it steady and driving in the camping field is done so at your own risk.

We do limit vehicle movement after dark. If you’ve been out for the evening and get back after 10pm there is an overnight parking area near the entrance to the field. You can park up here for the night and walk back to your pitch.

Please always drive very carefully and with the assumption that children are playing nearby.

We have a strictly enforced, zero tolerance, 5mph speed limit.

Why aren't trailer-tents, caravans or large motorhomes allowed?

Basecamp is a basic, off-grid camp without the facilities and services caravans and motorhomes usually expect.

Our camp can only be accessed by a steep road with a tight hairpin bend which is not ideal for towing vehicles. There is also a low, sloping bridge with a low point of 2.7m which restricts access to tall vehicles. Trailer-tents are welcome if you are confident your vehicle has the torque to get up to the camp and understand the limited facilities available.

Activities

What activities do you offer?

We offer a range of activities with self-led activity prices from just £4 per person!

Activities available onsite include: frisbee golf, orienteering, tobogganing, skiing, snowboarding, archery, axe throwing, air rifles, climbing, abseiling, bushcraft, archery active and caving.

Just a short drive away we also offer canoeing, kayaking and caving.

Our activity and snowsport centre is just a short woodland walk away where most of our activities take place. Our watersports site is a 15-minute drive from the campsite and our private rocksports quarry is a 15-minute drive or a beautiful 20-minute walk.

How do I book activities?

Activities can be booked on our website here - https://mendip.me/book/outdoor/

Do I have to book activities in advance?

We strongly recommend booking all activities in advance as we regularly sell out of our instructor-led activities, especially during peak times.

Activities that do not require an instructor (frisbee golf and orienteering) will always be available wihtout prebooking.

All activities can be booked online - https://mendip.me/book/outdoor/

What ages are your activities for?

Tobogganing is available for ages 4+

Skiing is available for ages 5+

Snowboarding is for ages 8+, but must also have at least a size 2 adult shoe and be 1.2m tall

Frisbee Golf does not have an age restriction and under 6's play for free!

Our outdoor activity sessions can be run in two ways, with different minimum ages:

If you are booking individual spaces on an activity session, the minimum age is 8.

You are also able to book a session privately just for your group. If you book the session exclusively we can real the age restriction and you can bring up to four children aged 6 or 7 - everyone else must be eight or over. If you have anyone under eight in your group, at least one adult must take part.

Do I have to book activities with you to camp?

Not at all! You are welcome to use our site as a base to explore the local area or just to enjoy the beautiful Mendip Hills. There is no obligation to book activities with us during your stay.

Is there a cafe onsite?

Yes, we have a coffee shop cafe within the Pavilion marquee right in the middle of the campsite. Here you can get barista coffee, breakfast rolls and pastries every morning. The daytime/evening menu includes paninis, pizzas, fries and cakes. You can buy hot and cold, soft and alcoholic drinks here too.

If you are looking to explore the site further, the Alpine Lounge is our cafe-bar at Mendip Activity Centre which is just a 10 minute walk from camp.

Should I worry about ticks?
Ticks are present in the Mendip Hills. Ticks can be found in long grass, woodland, open country, public parks and gardens. Help prevent tick bites by sticking to paths, avoiding brushing against the vegetation, wearing light clothing so ticks are easier to spot and brush off, and using insect repellent.

Check your clothes and your body regularly for ticks when you're outdoors and when you get home.  Ticks can transmit bacteria that can cause diseases such as Lyme disease. Symptoms of Lyme disease can include flu-like symptoms and a distinctive circular rash.

For advice on removing ticks and what to do if you get a bite visit mendip.me/ticks
